George Cardell Briggs CMG〔(London Gazette )〕 OGS〔(Church Times obituary )〕 (6 September 1910 – 15 March 2004)〔(Roots Web )〕 was the first Bishop of The SeychellesThe Times, 20 January 1973; pg. 16; Issue 58686; col C Church news〕
Born in Warrington, Briggs was educated at Worksop College and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. After studying at Ripon College Cuddesdon he was ordained in 1935. He was a curate of St Alban’s Stockport until 1937 〔Who was Who1897-2007: London, A & C Black, 2008 ISBN ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 when he became a missionary priest in the Diocese of Masabi, Tanzania. He was the Archdeacon of Newala from 1955 to 1964 and then Rector of St Alban’s Dar-es-Salaam until 1969〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 when he became Warden of St Cyprian’s Theological College, Masasi, his last post before ordination to the episcopate.
